Polyethylene

Polyethylene is a thermoplastic transparent polymer with high chemical resistance. The raw material for it is the simplest olefin ethylene gas. Polyethylene is obtained by polymerizing ethylene at low and high pressures in the form of granules from 2 to 5 mm. There are several types of polyethylene, and each is best suited for different applications. For example, LDPE is widely used in grocery bags or plastic wrap production. HDPE is widely used in construction, i.e. in drainage pipes production.

Polyethylene is an extremely useful and commonly used commercial plastic, especially among design companies. Due to the variety of PET options, it is used in applications.

Key takeaways

  • Polyethylene is not available as a 3D printing material. It can be CNC machined or vacuum formed.
  • PET is durable and also has impact-resistant properties.
  • Recycled PET can be used for a variety of uses, including polyester fibers for carpets, car parts, fiber filling for coats and sleeping bags, shoes, luggage, T-shirts, and more.
  • Polyethylene films are neutral to groundwater in landfills and are a welcome energy source in incineration plants.
